“Boys will be Boys”
By K.B.
Helpless-hated-humiliated when a father strikes a blow
Across his children’s face
He wipes away their childhood
The sins of the father handed down to his disgrace
To another generation, another place, another time
Most of us are doing “life”
For some imaginary “crime”
Just when you think you’ve left behind your past and all its pain
Another hand is raised above you
By another one who loves you
And the pattern is repeated
Sins of the father handed down to his disgrace.
He cries and says he’s sorry and he loves you
But you know it isn’t right
How he beats you when he’s angry
And how he touches you at night
But you can’t say “no” to daddy
And you’re much too small to fight
When the sins of the father are handed down to his disgrace
To another generation
He is too ashamed
To face
So time after time
The children are doing “life”
For some imaginary “crime”
Who will break the cycle of a love that destroys
And throw away that sick excuse
“I guess that boys will be boys” 1993
